Lung cancers can be subdivided broadly into small cell or non–small cell carcinomas, with the latter including squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Treatment decisions and prognoses are highly dependent on these categories. Signs and symptoms may vary depending on the tumor type and extent of metastasis. Targeted therapeutics are emerging, with specific indications beyond the scope of this course, but the basic workup should be understood by any aspiring physician.
