with Dr. Helen Farrell, MD, from Harvard Medical School

Observing behavioral patterns and especially recognizing psychiatric emergencies plays an important role in ensuring patient safety, as well as the safety of others. Given that psychiatry often relies on self-reported symptoms for diagnosis, its methods differ significantly from other medical fields, which can make it seem daunting to approach.

This course covers the diagnosis and management of all major groups of psychiatric disorders and forensic psychiatry. You will learn from Dr. Helen Farrell, MD, an experienced psychiatrist who has taught students at Harvard Medical School for over a decade. After teaching you how to conduct a comprehensive psychiatric assessment step-by-step, Dr. Farrell will walk you through the process of recognizing behavioral patterns, and how to differentiate and manage personality, thought, and mood disorders, anxiety and stress-related disorders, control disorders, dissociative disorders, and neurocognitive disorders. The course covers pharmacological as well as nonpharmacological management approaches. Special attention is given to the recognition of psychiatric emergencies such as suicidal ideation or aggression.

The combination of Video Lessons with interactive quiz questions, downloadable study materials, and a USMLE-style Qbank makes it easy to understand and retain the topics. By the end of this course, you will be well-prepared to diagnose and manage psychiatric disorders, conduct thorough psychiatric assessments, and excel in both your exams and future medical practice.

FAQs

What is psychiatry?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, psychiatry is “the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.”

Psychiatry vs psychology: What’s the difference?

Despite being closely related, psychiatry and psychology are not the same thing. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine, and psychiatrists are physicians who can prescribe medication. Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. Psychologists who work as psychotherapists typically use talk therapy in their work with patients.

Do psychiatrists offer therapy?

Generally, psychiatrists can also work as psychotherapists. They also use other treatment options, such as medication. In many cases, patients will see both a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist.
