Infective endocarditis, as its name suggests, is an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart which includes infections of the valves and intracardiac prothestic devices. Populations at risk include those with previous endocarditis, congenital or valvular heart diseases, drug abusers, and dental and surgical procedures. Endocarditis is a serious infection as it can lead to valve insufficiency, embolic stroke, septic emboli and immune reactions.
