Pharmacology (MBBS India)

Pharmacology (MBBS India)

by Pravin Shukle, MD, Prof. Lawes
Pharmacology is the branch of medicine concerned with studying the composition, uses, effects, and modes of action of drugs, especially with relation to their therapeutic value. The concept of a special compound or preparation being administered with the intent of producing a therapeutic effect was very prevalent in the ancient world, in almost all healer traditions. Today, pharmacology is a broad field of study, with many areas of focus, including inflammation, antimicrobials, immunomodulators, chemotherapeutic drugs for
the treatment of cancer, and more.

In this course, the student will be given a tour of the basic concepts of pharmacology and the different drug families used in different clinical scenarios. Additionally, the student will be given an introduction to the basics of dosage calculation.

For optimal comprehension, the student is required to have a solid grasp of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and pathology.

Drugs are a crucial asset in a physician's therapeutic arsenal. A solid grasp of pharmacology allows one to manage or even cure thousands of conditions. From choosing the correct antibiotic for a specific infection, or correcting a hormonal imbalance, to avoiding life-threatening drug interactions. The study of pharmacology is the basis of therapeutic medicine.
