Precise anatomical terminology enables clear documentation Documentation Systematic organization, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of specialized information, especially of a scientific or technical nature. It often involves authenticating or validating information. Advance Directives in medical records and research Research Critical and exhaustive investigation or experimentation, having for its aim the discovery of new facts and their correct interpretation, the revision of accepted conclusions, theories, or laws in the light of newly discovered facts, or the practical application of such new or revised conclusions, theories, or laws. The international standard for anatomical terminology, Terminologia Anatomica, was established in 1998 to replace the older Nomina Anatomica system. Directional Terms

All directional terminology assumes the body is in the standard anatomical position: standing upright with the head and eyes facing forward, upper limbs at the sides, and palms facing anteriorly (supinated). The feet are together or slightly apart, with the toes pointing forward. Regional Names

Regional anatomical terms allow clinicians to precisely communicate the location of physical findings, pathologies, or procedures, forming the foundation for accurate clinical examinations, medical records, and surgical planning.

Clinically, the abdomen is often divided into 4 quadrants by 2 perpendicular lines crossing at the umbilicus.   • Right Upper Quadrant Right upper quadrant Anterior Abdominal Wall: Anatomy (RUQ): 
    • contains the liver Liver The liver is the largest gland in the human body. The liver is found in the superior right quadrant of the abdomen and weighs approximately 1.5 kilograms. Its main functions are detoxification, metabolism, nutrient storage (e.g., iron and vitamins), synthesis of coagulation factors, formation of bile, filtration, and storage of blood.   • Right Hypochondriac region
    • Located in the upper right area under the costal margin

  • Mediastinum Mediastinum The mediastinum is the thoracic area between the 2 pleural cavities. The mediastinum contains vital structures of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems including the heart and esophagus, and major thoracic vessels.     • contains heart, trachea Trachea The trachea is a tubular structure that forms part of the lower respiratory tract. The trachea is continuous superiorly with the larynx and inferiorly becomes the bronchial tree within the lungs. The trachea consists of a support frame of semicircular, or C-shaped, rings made out of hyaline cartilage and reinforced by collagenous connective tissue. Structurally, the stomach is C-shaped and forms a greater and lesser curvature and is divided grossly into regions: the cardia, fundus, body, and pylorus.
