Reproductive endocrinology is a field of study dealing with fertility. Infertility is a problem that affects both women and men. Essentially, when a person is infertile, their reproductive organs will not allow them to conceive a pregnancy. There are two types of infertility. Primary infertility relates to couples who have not become pregnant after at least one year of having unprotected sexual intercourse. Secondary infertility relates to couples who were able to conceive in the past but are no longer able. Facing the challenges of infertility can be an emotional travail for couples trying to conceive.
The field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility is wide ranging, covering such areas as the causes of virilization, hirsutism, and abnormal uterine bleeding (a broad term that describes irregularities in the menstrual cycle involving the frequency, regularity, duration, and volume of flow outside of pregnancy). It may also involve other disorders of the endocrine system (e.g., hyper- or hypothyroidism) and issues related to desire, arousal, and orgasm.
