Reproductive Endocrinology

by Lynae Brayboy, MD

Reproductive endocrinology is a field of study dealing with fertility. Infertility is a problem that affects both women and men. Essentially, when a person is infertile, their reproductive organs do not allow them to conceive a pregnancy.

There are two types of infertility. Primary infertility defines the inability to become pregnant following at least one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Secondary infertility relates to couples who were able to conceive in the past but are no longer able. In either case, facing the challenges of infertility can be an emotional travail for couples trying to conceive.

The field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility is wide-ranging, covering such areas as the causes of virilization, hirsutism, and abnormal uterine bleeding. It may also involve other disorders of the endocrine system (e.g., hyper- or hypothyroidism) and issues related to desire, arousal, and orgasm.
