La gestación, y todas las prácticas asociadas a su conclusión satisfactoria, han acompañado a la humanidad desde sus inicios, tomando distintas formas en todas las culturas y épocas. Fue evidente desde la antigüedad que toda parturienta requería, más comúnmente que no, apoyo durante el proceso de parto, el cual era encarnado en la figura de la partera. En tiempos modernos, el desarrollo de la ciencias médicas permitió la síntesis de la especialidad conocida como obstetricia: la rama dedicada al estudio del estado de embarazo, el parto y el período postparto.

Íntimamente relacionada a la obstetricia se haya la ginecología: la rama de la medicina que se ocupa del estudio de la salud y enfermedades de las mujeres y del sistema reproductor femenino. Es esta especialidad la que suple las necesidades específicas de la mujer en términos de su salud reproductiva.

En este curso, el estudiante será introducido en los conceptos básicos de ginecología y obstetricia, incluyendo las entidades clínicas más frecuentes, los tamizajes más importantes, y las técnicas requeridas para una atención exitosa. Se ha procurado incluir únicamente aquellos temas más relevantes para el examen ENARM.

Para tener éxito en ambas, el estudiante de medicina debe tener un entendimiento claro de la anatomía de la mujer, y fisiología de los sistemas endocrino y reproductor femeninos. Para entender la gestación se deben tener ideas claras sobre la embriología, específicamente en términos de cronología.

El médico competente debe estar en la capacidad de acompañar a la mujer a lo largo de su vida sexual, incluyendo la atención preconcepcional, prenatal, intra-parto y post-parto, con atención plena para la detección de las complicaciones asociadas con cada etapa.

Dr. Lynae Brayboy is an Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Brown University, in Rhode Island, USA.
She obtained her MD from Temple University School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. Currently, she is double-board certified in OB/GYN, as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and is also Visiting (Reproductive) Scientist at the Charité Berlin.
Due to her achievements, she has earned multiple teaching awards.
