Neoplasms of the Endocrine System

Neoplasms of the Endocrine System

by Carlo Raj, MD

Because of the diverse nature of endocrine organs, along with their vast range of physiologic functions, endocrine tumors encompass a wide range of origination sites and disease entities. The clinical picture of affected individuals is highly dependent on the tissue of origin and the presence or absence of functional hormone secretions. Identification, localization, and therapeutic strategies, as well as prognosis, can vary greatly.

Most endocrine tumors are benign (not cancerous), but a few will become cancerous. Collectively, endocrine cancers are much less common than other kinds of cancer. Because hormones play such a key role in keeping the body balanced, both benign and cancerous endocrine tumors have the potential to cause serious problems. For this reason, they may require some form of treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy. Almost all endocrine tumors require at least some evaluation and monitoring. Therapy is often quite specific to the gland involved and the specific subtype of cancer.
