Hematologic Disorders

The hematologic system is responsible for several of the body's most critical functions, including the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues, the clearance of toxic metabolic by-products, defense against offending pathogens, and maintenance of hemostasis in the setting of trauma. Its exquisite complexity is difficult to overstate and challenging to understand comprehensively. Hematologic pathology can range from benign to malignant, as hematopoietic progenitor cells are often some of the most rapidly dividing cells in the body and are susceptible to harmful mutations.

Understanding the steps involved in appropriate coagulation allows us to target various deficiencies in the pathways or modulate their effects to achieve a desired outcome, whether that be decreased clotting time or increased bleeding time. Anticoagulants and their reversal agents are some of the most widely used drugs in medicine and have some of the most serious side effects, so it is important to understand appropriate indications for their use and how to monitor their efficacy.
