White blood cells, or leukocytes, participate in both the innate and the humoral immune responses. Their role is to mount inflammatory responses against foreign pathogens or cellular injury. Leukopenia occurs when the leukocyte counts are lower than normal, whereas leukocytosis is characterized by a count that is higher than typically expected. The latter is commonly a sign of an inflammatory response, but it can also occur as a result of parasitic infections or cancers such as leukemia. Neutrophils may also become elevated because of other conditions such as stress.
