Ophthalmology (MBBS India)

Ophthalmology (MBBS India)

by Stephen Holt, MD, MS, Richard Mitchell, MD
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the eye and its surrounding structures. The eyes and their adequate functioning are key determinants in the functionality of an individual, conditioning their ability to traverse the world and perform complex tasks. The study of ophthalmology relies on the previous comprehension of the anatomy and physiology of the related structures, including the eyelid, lacrimal apparatus, extraocular muscles, ocular globe, and visual pathway. A solid grasp of these structures allows for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of dozens of conditions. Likewise, mastery of the medications used within this field is crucial. Physicians must be familiar with the basic concepts of ophthalmology and common ocular pathologies since complaints related to the eyes, such as redness, pain, and changes in visual acuity, are very frequent in clinical practice.
