Shock is a life-threatening manifestation of circulatory failure. Circulatory shock can be thought of as a reduction in blood pressure extreme enough to result in inadequate delivery of oxygen to tissue, leading to tissue hypoxia and, subsequently, cell death and organ dysfunction. In the early stages, the sequelae of shock are reversible, but a delayed diagnosis or failure to promptly initiate appropriate therapeutic interventions can result in irreversible damage, such as multiorgan failure and death.
