Bacterial Skin Infections in Patients with Darker Skin

by Ncoza Dlova

Bacterial infections of the skin present with unique and often subtle manifestations in patients with darker skin tones, requiring specialized knowledge for accurate diagnosis and treatment. This course bridges microbiology and clinical dermatology by examining how common bacterial infections—from impetigo and folliculitis to syphilis and tuberculosis—appear and respond to treatment in melanin-rich skin.

Students with a foundation in basic dermatology and microbiology will develop critical diagnostic skills that address healthcare disparities and enable culturally competent care across diverse patient populations.
