Hair disorders in patients with dark skin encompass a range of conditions with unique clinical presentations, diagnostic challenges, and treatment considerations that differ significantly from those seen in lighter skin types. These differences stem from the distinctive hair structure, growth patterns, cultural hair care practices, and genetic predispositions found among individuals with darker skin tones.
A comprehensive understanding of hair disorders in dark skin requires foundational knowledge in dermatology, trichology, and cultural sensitivity regarding diverse hair care practices. This course bridges the gap between basic science concepts such as follicular biology and hair cycle dynamics with clinical manifestations specific to darker skin phenotypes. For clinicians, recognizing and properly managing these conditions is essential for providing equitable care, as misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatments and permanent hair loss, particularly in scarring alopecias that disproportionately affect patients with darker skin tones.
