Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy (MBBS India)

by Carlo Raj, MD, Mohammad Hajighasemi-Ossareh, MD, MBA, Stephen Holt, MD, MS
Dermatology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and management of disorders of the skin. These include a multitude of conditions, from the very common acne vulgaris and burns to malignancy and the cutaneous manifestations of autoimmune diseases. Infectious diseases of the skin are also an important chapter of study in dermatology, including conditions such as leprosy and the cutaneous manifestations of venereal diseases. For optimal understanding, the student must be familiar with the histology of the skin, including its basic structure, types, and annexed components (follicles, sweat glands, and nails). Adequate study of skin lesions requires a paused process of observation to ensure greater retention. The competent physician must have an excellent “eye” for skin lesions and be able to differentiate between dermatologic conditions. Additionally, the clinician must also be knowledgeable of the dermatologic manifestations of systemic diseases, such as autoimmune conditions (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus), metabolic conditions (e.g., acanthosis nigricans in diabetes mellitus), or malignancy (e.g. dermatomyositis in lung cancer).

Great series!
By Genevieve M. on 13. July 2022 for Skin Infections

I liked the visual images accompanying the description, as I’m very unfamiliar with soft tissue infections. I liked the use of a clinical case presentation, and the subsequent process of elimination. It would have been helpful if descriptive words used to characterize the skin lesions were further elaborated on, such as for example “maculopapular”

Dermatology videos.

Loved the concise and crisp approach. Very informative lectures. Helps to get an idea about the topic in a small time
