Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disturbances in behavior, thought, and perception. We have elucidated a fairly clear pathophysiologic basis for schizophrenia, and correlated pharmacologic treatment strategies exist. However, the treatments may have significant side effects, and the disease itself may act as a barrier to treatment. Isolated thought disorders are often less impairing. Earlier recognition and treatment may significantly reduce morbidity and mortality in these patients.
