Adrenal Gland Disorders

by Carlo Raj, MD

The adrenal glands are key to metabolic regulation in humans, as they secrete a myriad of important hormones. They consist of two primary zones: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. The adrenal cortex is the outermost layer and secretes hormones such as testosterone, cortisol, and aldosterone. The medulla is the innermost layer and secretes epinephrine. The disorders covered in this course—Addison disease, Cushing syndrome, disorders of aldosterone and pheochromocytoma—are vital for any physician to understand before entering practice.
