Anesthesiology: Introduction

by Brian Warriner, MD, FRCPC

Anesthesiology is the field of medicine primarily focused on bringing upon the patient a state of anesthesia, which is characterized by a reversible loss of consciousness, analgesia, amnesia, and muscle relaxation by using pharmacological agents known as anesthetics. Other areas of focus include management of patients in the ICU, management of chronic pain, and palliative care.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the history of anesthesiology, respiration and the cardiovascular system while under the effects of anesthesia, important concepts of homeostasis and acid-base balance, anesthetic systems, and difficult airway management. Gases, induction drugs, opiates, and sedatives will be brought up for review.

For optimal understanding, the student should be familiar with the physiologies of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems (especially the mechanics of ventilation and lung volume), the basics of acid-base balance, the pathophysiology of pain, the basic concepts of pharmacology, and commonly used intravenous, local, and inhaled anesthetics.
