Clinical Research Ethics

by Mark Hughes, MD, MA

Upholding ethical principles is vital in safeguarding the well-being and rights of research participants, maintaining scientific integrity, and advancing medical knowledge. Responsible conduct in clinical research entails adherence to ethical guidelines, regulatory standards, and the welfare of research participants.

Several ethical principles serve as pillars for conducting ethically sound research. These principles include respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Respect for Persons: Medical students must recognize the inherent dignity and autonomy of research participants. Beneficence: Medical students should prioritize the well-being and welfare of research participants. This involves maximizing benefits and minimizing potential harms or risks associated with the research. Justice: Ensuring fairness and equity in research is essential. Medical students should strive to distribute the benefits and burdens of research fairly, avoiding any form of discrimination.

Familiarity with ethical principles, responsible conduct, and relevant regulations will enable students to answer such questions accurately, demonstrating their competence in ethical decision-making.
