Angela Richard-Eaglin, DNP, FNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, is the Associate Dean for Equity at Yale School of Nursing and an Associate Clinical Professor. She is a champion for expanding diversity and inspiring cultural intelligence and cultural humility in health professions education and in clinical practice. As a Certified Professional Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Unconscious Bias Facilitator and Coach through the Cultural Intelligence Center, Dr. Richard-Eaglin has developed and provides customized workshops that inform practicing health professionals, health professions educators, students, researchers, and staff in multiple departments on the application of CQ to organizational wellness, bias management, and mitigation of bias-influenced health outcomes. What does DEIB stand for?
DEIB stands for: divrsity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. These are the 4 central values required to achieve a just healthcare system.
As the effects of prevalent inequities in healthcare are far-reaching and often go unnoticed, it is crucial that nurses learn how and why such issues develop, as well as how to identify and address them in practice so that every client can receive comprehensive, culturally intelligent care.
What is (health) equity?
As per the definition of the WHO: “Equity is the absence of unfair, avoidable, or remediable differences among groups of people. […] Health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and well-being.
What is diversity?
Diversity refers to the practice of including people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds/genders/sexual orientations etc, therefore involving a variety of people. In healthcare, that can mean that people with all kinds of different backgrounds are represented – in the role of healthcare providers, as well as in care plans that anticipate different needs of a diverse set of patients.
What is inclusion?
Inclusion refers to the practice of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized. In healthcare, that can mean working towards making health services equally accessible to everyone, as well as making everyone feel included, heard, and valued.
