Therapeutic Communication in Psychiatric Nursing

Therapeutic Communication in Psychiatric Nursing

by Brenda Marshall, EdD, MSN, RN

Therapeutic communication is an important skill for all nurses in all clinical settings. This skill allows you to de-escalate tense situations, demonstrate that you have heard what a patient has expressed to you, and prioritize the well-being of your patients.

In this course, you will learn about communication and influencing factors, how to differentiate reassurance and advice, and how to engage in active listening. We’ll discuss therapeutic communication as it specifically relates to psychiatric patients and establish what type of communication would be considered non-therapeutic.
