Med School Year 1

by Mohammad Hajighasemi-Ossareh, MD

Starting medical school can be both exhilarating and intimidating. In addition to acclimating to the demanding course load, most students are also moving to a new city or state, adjusting to a new area.

Moreover, unlike college, where students often arrange their classes and fit in additional activities, medical school involves a set schedule that a curriculum committee decides is most effective. Although this does remove one stressor, the schedule can still be quite demanding. Typically, the first year centers on learning human physiology, histology, anatomy, and biochemistry. Some schools still require students to participate in a full day of lectures, while others offer online or small-group learning. It’s important to find resources that suit your style of learning early on, and to connect with upperclassmen who can guide you.
