Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification is the standard for evaluating the qualifications of international medical graduates (IMGs) who are entering or aiming to enter the US healthcare system. The ECFMG defines IMGs as individuals who received their medical degree from a medical school outside the United States and Canada. The location of the medical school, not the citizenship of the individual, is what determines whether they are IMGs. So even a US citizen who graduated from a medical school outside of Canada or the US is considered an IMG, whereas a noncitizen who graduated from a North American medical school is not.
