Geriatric Care (APRN)

Geriatric Care (APRN)

by Charles Vega, MD, Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

Geriatric care focuses on addressing the unique healthcare needs of older adults, encompassing aspects such as promoting healthy aging, managing chronic conditions, and providing specialized care tailored to the physical, psychological, and social changes associated with aging.

As primary care providers, nurse practitioners must possess expertise in geriatric care to effectively manage complex medical conditions, address geriatric syndromes, ensure appropriate medication management, and provide holistic care that enhances the overall well-being and quality of life of older adults.

Students should have a foundation in principles important to the profession of nursing and a thorough understanding of physiology, pharmacology, and assessment.
