Cutaneous Manifestations of HIV in Patients with Darker Skin

by Ncoza Dlova

Cutaneous manifestations are among the most common clinical findings in HIV-infected individuals, with over 90% of patients developing skin conditions during the course of their disease. These dermatological presentations serve as important diagnostic markers, often reflecting the degree of immunosuppression and disease progression, making their recognition critical for comprehensive HIV management.

Understanding these skin manifestations requires prior knowledge of basic dermatology, immunology, and infectious disease principles. This course bridges the gap between the basic sciences of virology and immunology with the clinical aspects of HIV management, providing essential knowledge for early detection, differential diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of HIV-associated dermatoses. The ability to recognize and interpret these cutaneous signs not only aids in diagnosing previously undetected HIV infection but also helps in monitoring immune status and treatment response in known HIV patients.
