Nursing Pharmacology II builds on foundational pharmacology knowledge and focuses on advanced drug categories essential for nursing practice. Through video-based lessons and Qbank questions, students will explore gastrointestinal, central and peripheral nervous system, and endocrine medications, as well as pharmacologic therapies related to men’s and women’s health and cancer.
Emphasis is placed on connecting drug mechanisms to patient care, monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects, and applying clinical judgment in diverse scenarios. The course concludes with a comprehensive pharmacology review to reinforce key concepts and prepare students for success on the NCLEX (and comparable exams) and in professional nursing practice.
Learning objectives
After the completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the pharmacology of gastrointestinal medications, including mechanisms, therapeutic uses, and common side effects.
- Differentiate major classes of central nervous system drugs, such as analgesics, anesthetics, antidepressants, and antipsychotics.
- Describe the actions and clinical applications of peripheral nervous system medications, including cholinergic and adrenergic drugs.
- Identify endocrine medications used in diabetes, thyroid disorders, and hormone regulation, along with related nursing considerations.
- Discuss pharmacologic therapies for men’s and women’s health, including reproductive, hormonal, and contraceptive medications.
- Examine cancer medications, including chemotherapeutic agents and targeted therapies, with emphasis on safe handling and patient education.
- Apply the nursing process to medication management across complex systems and patient populations.
- Recognize adverse reactions, contraindications, and drug interactions specific to advanced pharmacologic categories.
- Integrate evidence-based guidelines when evaluating and administering advanced drug therapies.
- Demonstrate readiness for NCLEX pharmacology questions through review and practice with Qbank items.
