Nursing prerequisites are challenging to many candidates of nursing schools. An understanding of molecular and cell biology, as well as chemistry, are only some of the requirements. At the same time, this knowledge lays the foundation of every nurse’s future career.

Adam Le Gresley, Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Chemistry at Kingston University London, Kevin Ahern, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University, Georgina Cornwall from Colorado Mountain College in Aspen, Vincent Racaniello, Higgins Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Columbia University, and Tarry Ahuja from Carleton University combine their experience and knowledge to provide the nurses of tomorrow with the basic equipment for their further studies. At Lecturio, you will learn prerequisite topics at your own pace!

1. What prerequisites do I need for nursing?

General Requirements is a solid background in biological sciences. Typically, this includes at least some exposure to Anatomy and Physiology (two levels), and most often, a course in Microbiology. Other relevant courses, which may not be required but help you prepare for nursing school include psychology, chemistry, sociology, and algebra and/or statistics.

2. Can you get into nursing school without prerequisites?

At several colleges it is possible to start nursing school without any prerequisites. Freshmen usually only need a high school diploma or GED. Students are usually strongly advised to take some, if not all, general education courses before they begin.

3. How long does it take to complete nursing prerequisites?

The answer depends on your previous educational background. Most students complete the requirements in about two years. Those who have already taken courses in high school may meet the prerequisites even sooner.

4. Are nursing prerequisites hard?

It is a matter of opinion whether nursing prerequisites are hard. For most, the hardest part is allowing enough time to study. You also need a lot of motivation and the time factor plays a big role. So take enough time for the prerequisites and you will complete them successfully.

5. What prerequisites should I take for nursing?

Prerequisites for nursing school usually consist of general education and science courses taken in high school. The prerequisites vary by institution and degree level so you should always check the school’s website for up-to-date admission eligibility.
Here are the most common nursing school prerequisites:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Biology
  • Chemistry

Good But Could Be Better

by Brianna V. on 2022-06-06 for Upper Limb Anatomy

I think the content of the material is excellent, but I wish the diagrams were clearer and bigger. It is difficult to learn anatomy when labels are not clear. I think it would be helpful if lecturers could walk through 3D models

"The devil is in the details"

by Deborah H. on 2022-05-21 for Abdomen

I will always recommend the Lecturio platform to anyone studying for the medical boards who have been away from clinical and didactic. The level of detail that the lectures approach is so helpful. However, sometimes the bigger perspective should always be kept and mentioned throughout the lectures. There are times when I "lose sight of the forest for the trees". It will also help to remind the listener of associated functions constantly. Thank you, sincerely.

Organic chem course - my review

by Aniqah J. on 2021-12-29 for Organic Chemistry

I like this course because it is very concise and the videos are broken down into small manageable chunks. I also like how I can make quality notes from the video. I feel like I have learnt a lot from them and have found them really beneficial. The only criticism I would have is that I would like for some concepts to be made a little bit clearer as feel like I am not completely understand everything. However, that could just be because I'm a college student trying to learn uni-level stuff! I really like the questions afterwards but I think it would be even better if there was an explanation as to why that is the correct answer.
