Nurse Practitioner Focus: Sports Physicals

Nurse Practitioner Focus: Sports Physicals

by Rhonda Lawes, PhD, RN

The sports physical, also known as the preparticipation physical, is a thorough examination to determine whether an individual is mentally and physically able to participate in a sport or physical activity. As sports physicals are comprehensive assessments, a baseline understanding of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and mental health is needed to comprehend this skill completely. Regardless of where they practice, nurse practitioners will encounter clients who want to engage in sports, whether for the first time or following an injury or absence. Knowing how to assess these clients effectively is essential to providing comprehensive care.
