It makes sense for us to
just remind ourselves
of the broad categories of
rheumatic disease first.
First, you've got your connective tissue
diseases like rheumatoid arthritis
and lupus, Spondyloarthritides which is
the subject of this lecture,
Vasculitides, of which there's a wide
and Polyangiitis, Polyarteritis
And then non Autoimmune Arthritis
like Gout and Osteoarthritis.
With that overview, let's dive into
This group of diseases was historically
referred to as zero negative arthritides.
Distinguishing them from
which of course is zero positive specifically
for rheumatoid factor.
But the issue is that one quarter of patients
with rheumatoid arthritis
are seronegative for
moreover 10% of patients who are
seropositive for rheumatoid factor
are ultimately diagnosed with one of these
four conditions on the screen.
So while some may have been inclined to call
them usually zero negative arthritides,
the preferred terminology is just
