Ebola virus disease represents one of the most severe viral hemorrhagic fevers known to medicine, with case fatality rates that can exceed 90% in some outbreaks. This course provides comprehensive insights into Ebola through the pioneering work and firsthand experience of Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, who has been at the forefront of Ebola research and outbreak response since the virus was first identified in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1976. Understanding Ebola's complex epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical course is essential for healthcare professionals in an increasingly interconnected world, where emerging infectious diseases can rapidly cross international borders and pose global health security threats.
This course builds upon fundamental knowledge of virology, infectious disease principles, and public health epidemiology, requiring familiarity with basic microbiology and pathophysiology before exploring the unique characteristics of filovirus infections. Students will learn the etiology and transmission dynamics of Ebola, recognize its diverse clinical presentations from early non-specific symptoms to advanced hemorrhagic manifestations, and understand evidence-based approaches to treatment and prevention. The clinical relevance extends beyond infectious disease specialists to include emergency medicine, critical care, public health, and global health practitioners, as rapid recognition and appropriate containment measures are crucial for both individual patient outcomes and preventing community spread. Mastering these concepts enables healthcare professionals to contribute effectively to outbreak preparedness, clinical management, and public health responses in both endemic regions and areas at risk for imported cases.
Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum is the Director-General of the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Lovanium (now University of Kinshasa) in 1969, and his Ph.D. in Virology from the University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1973.
In 1976, Dr. Muyembe investigated the first Ebola outbreak in Congo and draw the blood samples to discover a new virus. He led the research for Ansuvimab which has been successfully tested as a treatment for Ebola and approved for use in 2019. Owing to his achievements in Ebola research and outbreak response, he received the Royal Society Africa Prize in 2014 and the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in 2019.
Within Lecturio, Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum shares his knowledge of infectious diseases, specifically Ebola and Mpox.
