00:01 So let's have a look at some of the surface landmarks of the esophagus and the stomach so we can have a slightly closer look here and we can see that the stomach is continuous with the abdominal esophagus. The esophagus mostly resides pretty much within the medium plane as it runs down the thorax but then the esophagus gives rise to the stomach or what we call the gastroesophageal junction. And this happens pretty much around the left 7th costal cartilage. It can be incredibly variable. Depending on the individual size of the liver can move some of this anatomy around and also in the size and shape of people's stomachs that can vary greatly depending on how much food they ingest and the size of that stomach can very much alter the position of this gastroesophageal junction. But typically it happen around the 7th costal cartilage. We then have the body of the stomach which we can see there sitting in the midline epigastrium and also moving out into the left hypochondriac region as well over in the left hand side.
The lecture Surface Anatomy of the Stomach by James Pickering, PhD is from the course Anatomy of the Esophagus and Stomach.
What is the correct position of the esophagus in relation to the trachea in the neck?
