00:04 Now, to complete the procedure, we can discard any supplies into the appropriate waste bins.

00:10 Ensure the bed is in the lowest position for client safety.

00:13 We can remove our gloves perform our hand hygiene and of-course document the procedure.

00:19 Now, once we've done this we want to transfer the collected blood specimens to the laboratory.

00:26 Now, one way we may do this, is what we call the, “Pneumatic tube system”, at your facility.

00:32 So, as you see here, there's a particular canister, that we put the labs in a biohazard bag, that's really important, make sure that's nice and sealed, we'll put that in the tube and then we send it through the tubing system to the lab.

00:48 So, the neat thing about this, it kind of reminds you that if you're at a bank and you're trying to get cash from the bank, it's much like that same system.

01:01 Now, to complete the procedure, we're going to discard any supplies into the appropriate waste bins, make sure the patient's bed is in the lowest position for client safety, remove our gloves, perform our hand hygiene and document the procedure.

01:15 And then you want to make sure to remember, to transfer the collected blood specimens to the laboratory.

01:25 So, let's talk about some special considerations, regarding venipuncture.

01:30 So, make sure you slow down.

01:33 And be sure the equipment is prepped as needed.

01:36 Also don't forget that when you disinfect that puncture site thoroughly, please do not retouch it because then we will contaminate the site.

01:45 And of-course make sure you observe the correct order of draw.

01:50 Don't forget that when you're observing laboratory procedures for example, make sure that some specific labs, you actually have to physically walk the blood samples to the lab, instead of using that pneumatic tubing system.

02:06 In some specific labs, like a homocysteine for example, you have to place that blood on ice immediately after collection.

02:14 Also, some labs, it's really important for accurate results to draw those labs at specific times.

02:22 And of-course, make sure you label the blood collection tubes, at the client's bedside, so we have the right patient and right patient identifiers.

    02:32 Thanks for watching today.

    Included Quiz Questions

    1. Send them to the laboratory immediately after collection
    2. Place them in a rack, collection-side down for two hours, then send them to the laboratory
    3. Freeze them for 5 hours, then send them to the laboratory
    4. Leave them at the client’s bedside until end of shift, then send them to the laboratory
    1. Some lab tests need to be drawn at specific times
    2. Some blood samples need to be walked to the laboratory instead of using the pneumatic tube system
    3. Collection tubes need to be drawn in a specific order
    4. All blood samples need to be put on ice prior to being sent to the laboratory.
