00:01 Okay, let's try an NCLEX exam-level question.

00:04 Which of the following patient statements indicates appropriate patient understanding for a patient receiving phenelzine? Okay, so I know that my job is to go back and look at this question again.

00:17 Which of the following patient statements indicates appropriate patient understanding? So I would underline that. Appropriate patient understanding for, for what? A patient taking phenelzine. Okay, so I know that's an MAOI inhibitor.

00:35 So before I look at the medications or before I look at the answers, I think what is this drug? It's an MAOI inhibitor. What do I know about the big risk for this? Oh, the types of foods that you eat. That can be a problem.

00:47 Now, I'm gonna show you the answer choices.

00:50 We've worked through the stem of the question together.

00:52 I would encourage you to work through the answer choices, eliminate the ones that you think are not correct but make yourself say why they're not correct then start the video again so that we can walk through the answer together.

    01:09 Okay, welcome back.

01:12 Hopefully this came to you as you're walking through that you did the work of eliminating these answer choices.

01:17 Now, I eat smoked salmon. What's the question asking me? Appropriate patient understanding. Well, letter A, it's I eat smoked salmon.

01:29 Nope. I know you can't have smoked fish. You can't have, right? Pickled fish, fermented fish, so that's out. No matter what else they're eating, that's out.

01:40 I've gotta eliminate that statement. Now, the next one. I can drink Chianti wine.

01:46 Oh, no. That's on our list that you can't have that so no matter what else the rest of that statement says, I'll finish it but that already tells me that knocks it out.

01:56 Now my blood sugar is better controlled now that I've started taking phenelzine.

02:01 Okay, no. I know that is not true so I'm hoping it's the last one.

02:06 I cannot take meperidine for pain control while on phenelzine.

02:11 Okay, now if you haven't been introduced to that concept yet, you knew from what we've already discussed that A, B, and C are wrong.

02:18 So we've put this question in here, in this spot, so you would recognize using the strategy of eliminating answer choices and making yourself say why.

02:29 Sometimes you're gonna end up with an answer that you almost feel like, gosh I hope this is right but sometimes you're gonna end up with an answer that truly is the right answer because you did the work.

02:40 You did the heavy lifting, you put the effort in of eliminating the answer choices that you knew were incorrect.
