00:05
How and why do we engage team
members through a diversity lands?
Why don't we talk about
teams and diversity together?
Well, before we start
talking about any of it,
we need to start with
cultural intelligence mindset.
00:18
And thinking about that
there's no one norm
from an organizational standpoint,
or from an individual standpoint,
because everybody has
different cultural backgrounds
and different upbringings.
00:30
And we think about culture in
terms of beliefs and attitudes
and how culture is formed
for individuals,
as well as how do we integrate
those individual cultures
into the organizational
goals and values,
and the mission of
the organization.
00:46
So the whole key is that
we don't want to impose
our norms onto people.
00:50
We want to figure out a way
to embrace norms and differences
among each member of the team
to form a cohesive team
that, again,
supports the organizational goals.
01:01
So when people can show up
as their authentic self,
it increases productivity.
01:06
So that's why it's important
not to try to change
people too much, and adapt.
01:11
That's the key word in all of this
adaptation and being flexible.
01:14
Teams that have a shared language
are more effective
and more productive.
01:19
And we can't get to
the shared language,
if we don't include the
cultural intelligence concept.
01:24
Through that concept is
how we build confidence
to be able to work
in diverse teams.
01:29
And we have to get to
know each other as a team
to be able to work
together effectively.
01:33
Teams that recognize the value
of different perspectives
are often more successful.
01:38
So by becoming more
culturally intelligent
and familiar with the
principles of that concept,
then we're able, number one,
to see our own perspectives.
01:47
And then able to embrace
differences in perspective
and see the beauty
and benefit in that.
01:52
Employees who are more
satisfied with their work
are often more likely to stay
in the organization.
01:58
And we're all going
to be more satisfied
when we're able to show up
to work in our authentic skin
and be our authentic selves without
fear of judgment or retribution.
02:08
So when we think about
building a collaborative team,
it takes ability to think
with others on behalf
of what matters to everybody
on the team, as a team,
and also on behalf of what
matters to the organization.
02:23
A collaborative teams
celebrates diversity.
02:26
And when we talk about diversity, we
don't just mean extrinsic factors,
we mean every part of a person
and what they bring to the table.
02:34
It promotes equity.
02:36
And people are more
intentional about inclusion
on collaborative teams
that focus on the
intelligence piece of it,
because we don't want anyone
to feel left out or not valued.
02:47
So that facilitates and
creates that sense of belonging
that we talked about.
And just a reminder,
belonging means that
you feel welcome.
02:55
Belonging is all
surrounded by a feeling.
02:58
And so again, we talked about it.
03:00
We've mentioned a little bit
about people leaving teams.
03:03
If you don't feel welcomed
in a space, people often leave.
03:07
The values and cultural
teams should always align
with the organizational values and
the culture of the organization.
03:13
And then if you find
yourself as a leader,
seeing that sometimes
those things don't align.
03:19
And it doesn't mean that values
can shift and change either.
03:22
So we need to think about that.
03:23
If the values don't align
with collaborative and
cultural intelligence,
then that's an
opportunity for leadership
to get together and
revisit the values
and maybe develop new ones in a way
that does celebrate diversity,
equity, inclusion, and belonging.
03:38
So, at the end of the day,
when that's done,
the work of the team will showcase
the organizational
commitment to DEIB.
