Greetings. In this lecture, we will discuss the tissue level of organization. By the end of this
lecture, you should know the different types of tissues found in the body, the different types
of cell junctions that hold the cells in those tissues together, and finally the different types
of membranes found in and on the body. First, what is a tissue? A tissue is a group of cells
that usually have a common embryonic origin in an embryo and function together to carry out
a specialized function or activity. There are 4 basic tissue types found in the human body and
we categorize these by their structure as well as their function. The 4 types of tissues found
in the body include epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue.

In this lecture, we will actually focus on just the epithelial and connective tissue and we will
learn about muscular and nervous tissue in future chapters.
