00:00 Another place we could use it is in farming of animals. We can use transgenic animals. In this case, we have salmon. Wild salmon are going to grow at a particular rate. We can introduce genes that influence growth hormone expression, growth factors and such and we can cause these organisms to grow much more quickly and increase the productivity not only of land-based organisms but sea-based organisms potentially we could bring these genetic modifications into all of our farming, which again controversy. In this lecture, we have covered a lot of different applications for genetic engineering and biotechnologies. We've explored some of the techniques in details. So I hope by now that you are able to explain the benefit of DNA libraries and see how they are used throughout biotechnologies as well as compare RFLP and STR DNA fingerprinting, short tandem repeats versus restriction fragment length polymorphisms. Finally, you should be able to discuss some of the applications of biotechnology to agriculture as well as to medicine. Thank you so much for listening. It has been tons of fun. I will look forward to seeing you in future lecture.
The lecture Transgenic Animals by Georgina Cornwall, PhD is from the course Biotechnology.
What are some great applications of biotechnology currently in use in medicine or agriculture?
