So let's think about some of our takeaways on neurodevelopmental disorders. They
occur during the perinatal period of brain development and are affected by genetic,
physiologic, and environmental factors. IDD, ASD, and ADHD are common, chronic,
lifelong disorders and they require interventions that respond to the signs and symptoms
that the patient exhibits. Medication as well as psychotherapy along with milieu therapy
or where we are treating the patient can help reduce the signs and symptoms of these
diseases impacting the person's ability to function in daily life. Remember always that
these disorders are marked as disorders because they interfere with the person's ability
to function in daily life. Although IDD, ASD, and ADHD are often seen, diagnosed, and
treated in pediatrics, these disorders remain during the lifespan and they must be a
consideration when we are providing care for metabolic disorders or emergency
interventions, or even planned surgery. In fact, for all medical surgical nursing care we
need to be aware of these disorders. People with IDD have children. People with ASD
break their leg. People with ADHD get gallstones. And so no matter where we're working
as nurses an understanding of the clinical manifestations of these developmental disorders
is really important.
