00:01 So when we talk about abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome.

00:04 You're going to see that all over the literature.

00:07 That means the patient has excess fat in the abdominal area.

00:11 Sometimes we describe that as 'apple-shaped.' So apple-shaped people put their weight right around the middle, that's where they put it on.

00:19 Pear-shaped people tend to put on around their hips and their lower thighs.

00:24 Now, we talk about metabolic syndrome.

00:26 If a patient has three out of five of these symptoms, and they're considered to have metabolic syndrome.

00:32 Now, here are the five.

00:34 You've got them right there on your screen.

00:36 You also see a clipboard there to remind you that this is just a screening.

00:40 So if they have abdominal obesity, elevated glucose, elevated blood pressure, ding, ding, ding, that's three out of five, but they can be any one of these three in this list of five.

00:52 So let's look at all of them.

00:54 Abdominal obesity, elevated glucose, elevated blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, and decreased level of HDL.

01:02 So the high density lipoproteins.

01:05 Okay, so if they've got five out of five, they just have that greater risk.
