00:01 Welcome! In this lecture we will be discussing the digestive system.

00:07 First let's look at the functions of the digestive system.

00:11 In our digestive system, We're going to take in food break it down into nutrient molecules absorb those molecules into the bloodstream and then rid the body of any indigestible remains.

00:26 The organs of the digestive system are going to fall into two main groups.

00:31 You have the alimentary canal also referred to as the GI tract, which is a continuous muscular tube that runs from the mouth to the anus.

00:42 In this canal we're going to digest food by breaking it down into smaller fragments.

00:48 Also in the canal, we're going to absorb these fragments through the lining into the blood.

00:55 The organs of the alimentary canal include the mouth, the pharynx, the esophagus, the stomach the small intestine, the large intestine and the anus.

01:07 Along with the organs of the GI tract to the alimentary canal.

01:11 We also have some accessory digestive organs that play an important part in digestion.

01:17 These include the teeth, the tongue the gallbladder, the digestive glands which are going to produce secretions that help break down food stuff, including the salivary gland, the liver and the pancreas.

01:34 So here we have a depiction of the digestive organs in the digestive system.

01:40 Again, starting at the beginning we have the mouth followed by the pharynx, the esophagus which leads into the stomach, the small intestine, large intestine, the rectum and then out through the anus also we have our accessory structures including the tongue, the teeth the liver, the gallbladder and the pancreas.
