Neuropathology: Foundations

By Carlo Raj, MD

Neuropathology is the field of study involving diseases of the nerves, brain, and spinal cord by microscopically examining tissue removed during biopsy or autopsy. Neuropathologists usually work in departments of anatomic pathology but also coordinatethe clinical disciplines of neurology and neurosurgery, which often depend on neuropathology for a diagnosis. As brain disease or brain injury often relates to the cause of death of many individuals, neuropathology is closely linked with forensic pathology.

An understanding of neuropathology is fundamental to understanding neurologic disorders and their associated clinical manifestations, whether they are degenerative (e.g., Parkinson or Alzheimer disease) or neoplastic (e.g., glioblastoma). Understanding neuropathology may also help guide clinical localization of neurologic disease.
