Sepsis is not a pathologic diagnosis but rather a clinical syndrome that represents the body’s systemic response to a severe infection. Sepsis can be a highly morbid condition with mortality rising in the case of associated organ failure or hypotension, also known as septic shock. Dysregulation of a number of biologic and physiologic factors (e.g., excessive inflammation, poor oxygen delivery, dysfunctional coagulation) can lead to organ dysfunction and death. A cornerstone of sepsis management is a high clinical index of suspicion that leads to early detection and management with evidence-based interventions, which include resuscitation and prompt antibiotic administration.
