00:01 So, as you can remember from our previous lecture on surface anatomy, the inguinal region is this region down here, we have both one on the right side and we have one on the left hand side. It’s this region which specifically we can see over by the anterior superior iliac spine and then progressing medially and inferiorly towards the pubic tubercle and the pubic symphysis over here. So, we have this region. On this side of the screen, on this opposite side, we can see a bony pelvis and we can actually make out these landmarks in a bit more detail.

00:39 So, this is a bony pelvis with all the skin and the musculature taken away and we can see the anterior superior iliac spine here and then we can see passing from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle which we can locate here, we have this inguinal ligament. And here, I have replicated this by this white line which we can see here and this inguinal ligament forms a really important structure with what’s known as the inguinal canal and this is a passageway that allows the spermatic cord in the male or the round ligament of the uterus in the female to pass from within the abdomen, within the abdominopelvic cavity and it allows these structures to pass out. It does this by passing through two inguinal rings. These are called your deep and superficial inguinal rings. And here, I can locate the superficial inguinal ring and here, lateral to it, we can see the deep inguinal ring.

01:49 These are really important openings that transmit, like I said, in the male, the spermatic cord and in the female, the round ligament of the uterus. We need to look at how these structures are passed through this canal and how this canal is formed by those muscles we spoke about in the previous lecture.
