Gastrointestinal Physiology

by Thad Wilson, PhD

Gastrointestinal physiology encompasses the processes behind the regulation of secretions and motility of the gastrointestinal tract to allow for the digestion and absorption of nutrients. To achieve this, the GI tract is heavily regulated by hormonal and nervous components. Since human beings are largely omnivorous, the remarkable length of the GI tract proves advantageous for extracting as much water and energy-rich compounds as possible from what is ingested.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the basic functions of the GI tract, the phases of digestion, the process of nutrient absorption, the hormones related to GI functions, the relationship between the gut and the autonomic nervous system, and the principles behind GI motility.

For optimal comprehension, the student must have a preliminary understanding of molecular and cellular biology—emphasizing the biochemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins—and the histology of all segments of the GI tract.
