The care of older adults presents many challenges but also offers many rewards. Geriatric care can be complex, involving the interplay of many medical problems accumulated throughout the years, as well as many interacting therapeutic modalities. It rewards those who can recognize this complex interplay, harbor a sensitivity for social stressors, and function as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
With geriatric patients, it is more prudent to discuss larger themes (e.g., medication overuse, maintaining functionality, nutrition, independence, death and dying) than to discuss specific disease topics. That is, it is important not to miss the forest for the trees, and to maximize quality of life.
