We're here to talk about
some general tips and tricks
for you as a nursing student.
00:07
When you go to clinical
as a nursing student,
bring a notepad and pen.
00:11
Nurses don't like giving
information more than once,
if they can avoid it.
We're busy.
00:18
There is nothing worse
than taking time
to give student information
or give them report.
00:25
And they asked me about
five minutes later,
when I just told them.
00:30
Be patient with your nurse.
They have lots going on.
00:33
They're dealing with
patients and family members.
00:36
Again, as a student,
be patient and be flexible.
00:41
While you're a
nursing student and in clinicals
Engage. Be helpful.
00:46
Don't just sit at your computer
doing your care plan
on the computer for
the whole shift.
00:52
Communicate with your nurse.
00:54
Let them know your goal
for the day and your schedule,
especially when you leave the floor
or when you come back from lunch.
01:01
When you go to post conference,
ensure that you thank the nurses
for allowing you
to shadow for the day.
01:08
When you first meet
your assigned nurse,
smile, introduce yourself.
01:13
Act as though you're excited
or happy to be there.
01:16
Not that you just rolled out of
bed and were forced to show up.
01:21
Ask questions when appropriate.
01:23
Nurses are really busy.
01:25
And if they're in
the middle of chaos,
don't ask them right then.
01:29
Wait to when the time seems right
or the immediate situation
has been taken care of.
01:35
As a student, don't avoid patients
activities of daily living
such as feeding or
personal hygiene.
01:42
And as an LPN student,
you know how to safely
assist with ADLs.
01:46
So be helpful.
01:48
No one is above
assisting with these.
01:50
Actually as a nurse,
doing a bed bath
is one of the best ways to
assess your client for the day.

Nursing students get
offered jobs all the time
while they're in clinical.
02:07
What makes these
students stand out?
Well, they work hard, they've got a
great attitude, and they're engaged.
02:15
Also, they don't come
to clinical looking like
they just rolled out of bed.
02:19
They look neat, well groomed.
02:22
Their scrubs are clean
and wrinkled free.
02:25
Guys, first impressions matter.
02:28
Also, if you liked the unit,
and you want to work there,
talk to your nurse
you’re with that day.
02:33
And if positions are open,
many times they can
direct you to the manager
to make that happen.
02:39
Nurses on the unit
have a lot of input
on the students they work with.
02:43
And if they had a student
who was lazy,
they're always on the computer
and never willing to help,
they're going to tell the manager
as soon as you leave for the shift,
say, "Hey, don't hire them.
It's just the way it is."
If you don't seem
engaged as a student,
why would that change
as a nurse?
Many times if you
were a great student,
nurses also remember your name
when your application comes up.
03:08
So, treat clinical,
like a job interview.
03:12
Other potential opportunities
to work on that floor
is maybe apply to be a
nurse assistant or an externship.
03:19
Specially, if you want to
work there in the future,
this is a great way to
get your foot in the door.
03:24
But this is only facilitated
if you came across
as a positive student
worth having on the unit.
03:32
So guys,
have a good attitude.
03:34
Be engaged and show interest.
03:37
This goes a long way
if you want to work on the unit
in the future.
