Embryology: Early Stages with John McLachlan

By John McLachlan, PhD

Biologically speaking, fertilization is the end goal of intercourse in humans. After it, the process of embryogenesis begins, giving rise to all the structures required for a fully formed human being. Embryology is the branch of biology that focuses on the study of embryos and their development. In the medical field, this branch narrows to the study of the development of human embryos, with the objective of finding the root causes of congenital abnormalities.

In this course, the student will be given an overview of the development of haploid cells (oogenesis and spermatogenesis), fertilization, implantation, and embryogenesis. Along the way, diseases arising from developmental processes going awry will be discussed.

For optimal comprehension, the student will be required to have preliminary knowledge of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry, with an emphasis on cell division and gene expression.
