00:01 Welcome to pharmacology by Lecturio. My name is Dr. PJ Shukle and I'm going to take you through antipsychotic medications in this lecture. Now we have drugs that are used to treat psychosis and hyperactivity. And we have drugs that are used to treat Parkinson's disease and dyskinesia. So in one case the drugs that are used to treat psychosis and hyperactivity are used to reduce the levels of dopamine or dopamine transmission in the brain. Drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease and dyskinesia increase the levels of dopamine and dopamine transmission. This is why the drugs that are used to treat psychotic disease and Parkinson's disease are connected. Let's talk about certain types of psychotic diseases that are very mild. Bipolar disease and cyclothymia are treated with some of the classical drugs like lithium and the novel agents that are listed here. Drugs that are used to treat more severe psychotic disorders include the classical drugs which include the phenothiazines and these newer drugs which are similar to the ones used to treat cyclothymia.
